Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists are experts in building the skills and strategies families can use to navigate everyday life successfully so they can carry out their daily occupations.  Occupations are what give our lives meaning and purpose.

Children’s occupations include:

Play- how children learn to develop their motor, cognitive, and social skills. They develop their imagination through play. Play is ever changing at each developmental stage. It begins as cause and effect and transforms into imaginary and abstract play which fosters creative minds and exploration of various environments.

Self care/life skills- involve learning how to be independent with eating, dressing, bathing, toileting, and grooming/hygiene. 
   
Education- Pre academic skills begin with puzzles and pre-handwriting skills and progresses to handwriting development.
individualized and can involve physical, artistic and social skills. They occur in a variety of environments.  


Hobbies-

Chores- are essential to being a part of a family.

Primary areas of focus for occupational therapists include:

Fine motor skills
Hand-eye coordination
Emotional regulation
Advocating of one's needs
Managing time
Sensory Challenges

When a child experiences difficulty in any of the above-mentioned areas this impacts their occupational performance. An occupational therapist can help a child and their family learn the skills to enable their child to play, take care of themselves, learn in various environments, engage in hobbies and chores to the best of their abilities while managing their individual needs. Occupational therapists also help children adapt to a variety of environments to foster personal growth and confidence while interacting with peers.
